چکیده

Remote observations of solar light scattered by dust in comet 67P/ChuryumovGerasimenko coma are of major importance to assess the properties of the dust and thus to prepare the rendezvous of the Rosetta spacecraft with comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. We present polarimetric data obtained from India in December 2008 and France in March 2009. Compared with previous observations of this comet and of other Jupiter family comets, they confirm that it is dust-poor, although it may exhibit outbursts leading to the ejection of dust particles from its subsurface, especially after its perihelion passage.

Cometary dust: the diversity of primitive refractory grains

Comet dust is primitive and shows significant diversity. Our knowledge of the properties of primitive cometary particles has expanded significantly through microscale investigations of cosmic dust samples (anhydrous interplanetary dust particles (IDPs), chondritic porous (CP) IDPs and UltraCarbonaceous Antarctic micrometeorites, Stardust and Rosetta), as well as through remote sensing (Spitzer ...

On the ejection velocity of meteoroids from comets

The ejection of meteoroids from comets has been discussed by many authors and is a problem that is important both for a full understanding of cometary processes and for the evolution of meteoroid streams. We reinvestigate the problem here, starting from simple physical principles, and compare the results that we obtain with those of other authors, in particular Whipple.

Photophoresis as a Source of Crystalline Silicates in Comets

Introduction: Crystalline silicates have been detected in a growing number of comets [1] [2] [3]. Since these bodies are presumed to be formed in the cold outer part of the solar nebula, several processes have been invoked in order to explain the origin of their crystalline silicates. It has been suggested that shock waves in the outer solar nebula could anneal the amorphous silicates to crysta...

Ju n 20 09 New constraints on the delivery of cometary water and nitrogen to Earth from the 15 N / 14 N isotopic ratio

New independent constraints on the amount of water delivered to Earth by comets are derived using the N/N isotopic ratio, measured to be roughly twice as high in cometary CN and HCN as in the present Earth. Under reasonable assumptions, we find that no more than a few percent of Earth’s water can be attributed to comets, in agreement with the constraints derived from D/H. Our results also sugge...
